Welcome! This is a website for writers and world builders. Here are Daily Writing Prompts and themed writing challenges to help you build your Jigaw Novel - one piece at a time.

I created these pages to help you generate creative writing. The different topics are designed to generate writing about many different aspects of a fictional world - maybe a world you can use for the next Nanowrimo.

****NEW**** As 2011 Nanowrimo approaches I have much to do... for example, some more prompts and also a lot of planning and brainstorming for my next nano novel. As usual I have not time for any of it so will simply rejoice at every word written and not worry about being ahead, or even, on time. Priority: the writing habit,using the jigsaw method. This is about writing, not pre-writing or background-making. Each activity should leave you with a small piece of your fictional world, or the start for a story set in your world.

Describe the maps of your world. Who makes the maps? Show some of the map making process and a problem a cartographer or his/her team has encountered.

Today write a section of a guidebook for your world. Choose one aspect: finding accommodation, or how to change money, and write for a traveller visiting your world for the first time.

If your world is too extreme/primitive/telepathic to use guidebooks, think of who/what would guide a visitor, and write for that scenario instead.

Write for ten minutes and see where this takes you.

February 20th Daily Writing Prompt

Today write about founding fathers (or mothers). What legends surround the founding of your story's society? This might be a grand legend about the beginning of civilisation or a small family story about how your character's ancestors came to be where they are.

Today write about houses. What kind of dwelling do the wealthiest, poorest and middling people of your world occupy?

Show a character in the process of acquiring their home, however that may happen.

Today write about learning. Show children learning in your world's traditional way - by rote, by memorisation of books, by injecting a knowledge serum... and create a scene showing willing and unwilling learners.

Today write about the mildest season in your world's year. How do people celebrate the end of extreme weather, should that be icy winters or searing summers? Is the temperate season a relief or a burden?

Show your characters at the start of the gentlest season.

Today write about glass. Is it a rarity in your world - perhaps taxed - or does it possess mystical qualities, used in spiritual locations?

Show your character with a glass object or structure, engaged in an everyday task.

Today show your character eating a forbidden food. Why is it not allowed? Who else knows about this? How is the character given away?

Write for ten minutes and show the power of food and taboo.

Today write about light. How much light is enough? Do your characters cope with working by candle light, lantern light - or do they insist on flooding their home and workplace with brilliant artificial light at all times?

Today write about companion animals. Is it customary in the world of your story for people to have pets? Do dogs/cats/otehr creatures form part of families and workplaces?

Today write about the cosmos. How do characters in the world of your story view the skies, stars, moons and planets if any are visible?

Show people responding to a sudden change in the skies.

Today write about hair. What does hair symbolise in the world of your story? is hair subject to fashion, law, religious rite, coming of age celebration? How are people with more or less hair treated? Is it OK to be bald, hairy legged, bearded, blonde?

Today write about writing - the marks and symbols used in your story's world to record or celebrate events. Does the culture write on paper, parchment, leaves, stones? Are marks painted on walls or tablets, are the marks permanents or temporary, like sand writings on a shore?

Today write about renewal. What rites or ceremonies mark the start of a new era for your characters? Does the world of your story look to seasons, tides, moons, or rigorous calendars for marking the start and end of its spiritual celebrations?

Today write about imprisonment. Who goes to prison in your story's world? Who escapes internment? Do prisons have lockdown, are they open prisons based on trust and good behaviour? Show a prisoner in his/her daily routine - or show what happens when prison life goes wrong, in any way you choose.

Write for 5 minutes or keep going if this topic inspires you.

Today, write about stimulants. Does your story's world have a coffee equivalent? If set in the contemporary world, show your character's relationship with coffee/tea/any other form of pick me up.

Today write about being lost. How many ways are there to be lost and how is being lost viewed in the culture of your story's world? Is it shameful, embarassing, celebrated, secretly admired?

Today, write about cold. Show your story's world in the grip of winter or describe how your characters respond to cold. What about animals - how do they cope, what are the ways your story's world has for caring for animals in winter?

Write for five minutes and see how many ways you use to write about low, low temperatures.

Today, write about money. Is your character a spender or a saver? Where do they store their money and how secure is it? Show your character suffering a lack of money or a glut of it.

Your character is talking on their home phone. What kind of phone do they have? What phone mannerisms does your character have? Show him or her in their 'phone persona'.

Today, include a little foreshadowing of what will happen after your story has ended. Is this in fact merely a new beginning? Will the tale continue? How will the characters go on with their lives after the whirlwind they have just experienced?

Today make everything in your writing joyous. Have joyous trees, roads, food, gestures, clothes. Let every word sing, we have reached the end and we are happy. Or make it all tragic, depending on the ending of your novel.

Nanowrimo 28th Daily Writing Prompt

Today write a big declamatory speech. It could be your villain, revealing his dastardly plot to a strangely passive audiennce; it might be your main character declaring his position on life, love and everything she has encountered on her journey. It could be a wrap up speech to tie together all the loose ends you've created as you write. Make it big and make it cross several paragraphs.

Today include an ignoble emotion in your story: jealousy, irritation, intolerance, anger. It might be something your character experiences, or it might be displayed by a minor character they encounter. But big it up, as the end is near!

Today write about the obstacles in a journey, perhaps a mundane journey or a climactic, life changing one. Include plenty of detail about what kept your characters from proceeding smoothly.

This month is a little different: same challenge to write an actual bit of something about the world you're creating - but with added conflict. Each prompt gives a movie-style crisis or climax scenario - and suggests one or more characters present who are in conflict.

Use the details of your specific world to create these mini scenes.
